Assignment #2


In Cormac McCarthy gloomy novel, The Road a man and his son are trying to survive in any possible way. In which the father demise, positive and selfish thoughts during the troubling time, are used to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole.  The man believe that the the boy and himself would survive and he will do anything to make sure that happens. "Are we going to die? Sometime. Not now.(McCarthy10)" The man is trying instill good faith and will into the boy, because he want the boy to believe that they will survive; he trying to be positive. The man feel that they can't slow down for anybody or anything. "And I'd give that little boy half of my food. Stop it. We cant."(McCarthy85)". He trying to make the boy understand that they can't help anybody, they want to survive. And the only way to survive is to be selfish. The boy just wanted to help out any living thing he saw. " The dog could catch something to eat. We can't.(McCarthy85)" The man is trying to survive and feel like the can't stop to help others out, if they want to survive. This thoughts help illuminate the the meaning of the work as a whole because the father is trying to make sure that he and his son survive because he love him so much and he feel like his duty. These actions causes changes on the plot structure. In life people are willing to do anything for the people that they love. Even if it mean not helping people to keep themselves safe.
